Where there is dark...

At some point during your life you will experience darkness. No one is immune to it, although for some, it might not be as all consuming, might not take as long to get out, but it will still at some point, sneak up on you and leave you feeling blind to the beauty of the world.
For some people, for some of the time it feels like it is all there ever is, this black nothingness that can swallow you whole. An endless abyss that stretches on with no way of knowing whether it will ever end or how deep you are going to fall into it. This is how it has felt for me recently...I have been going through my own period of darkness. There has been so much bad stuff, so many nasty things that it's been difficult to see any sort of ending, any sort of way through.
However...in every period of darkness, there is light. You just have to know where to look for it and once you start searching, eventually that light will come and find you. It could come in the kind words of a stranger, in the thoughts and prayers of a close friend, in the arms of a loved one or in the form of something completely random, something that happens out of the blue.
It's sometimes easy to miss the pinpricks, to miss the tiny dots that are trying to show us the way. When your eyes are so used to the black holes, they become accustomed to the blindness, but this is where our strength must come in and we must remain vigilant, we must always be on the lookout for those first specks of light, because when you find one, when you acknowledge it, when you take it and embrace it in both of your hands it becomes more than just a speck, it opens up to become a whole beam of light, and from that beam we can begin to bathe in the warm, healing light, we can let it lead us out of the darkness and away from the shadowy areas in our life.
So, I guess, what I am really trying to say is...don't ever let that darkness win. No matter how black it may seem, always be looking for those first beginnings of light and always be willing to turn them into solar flares, because once you can do that, once you can grab hold of the beauty in life and turn it into your very own light, you'll never again be lost in the abyss.
